Nordic postal operator PostNord has succeeded in catching a gang of thieves who had been stealing packages from the back of delivery trucks whilst traveling at speeds of up to 80kmph (50mph).

After noticing recurring thefts from trucks traveling on a specific Swedish highway, Postnord contacted the local police and began fitting the trailer with hidden surveillance cameras. Astonishingly, the cameras recorded the thieves in action as they drove up to the back of the van, climbed onto the bonnet of the car and broke open the lock before leaping into the van, where they quickly began ransacking the delivery cages.

Alexis Larsson, head of security and complaints at PostNord, and the person responsible for investigating the matter said, “It is extremely unusual to catch a gang involved in this form of advanced crime – breaking open locks and getting into a truck at high speed. But thanks to the close cooperation with the police in Alingsås, we succeeded.”

The PostNord security team were able to watch the surveillance film in real-time on a tablet device and could advise the truck driver when the thieves had entered the trailer. The driver then slowed the delivery vehicle, forcing the criminals’ car to pull back. When the truck finally stopped and the men opened the back doors, they were met by a large police unit.
