Belgian postal operator Bpost has announced its plan to install more than 12,000m² of additional solar panels at its distribution centers this year as part of its commitment to sustainable energy.
The post will install the technology at nine new solar panel parks in Belgium, accounting for an annual CO2 reduction of 509 tons. The first of the new solar panel parks has already been installed in Ostend.
According to Bpost, its goal is to generate as much electricity as possible in a sustainable way. It has already installed more than 70,000m² of solar panels on the roofs of 39 buildings across the country, such as post offices, distribution centers and sorting centers.
614 new solar panels in Ostend
Bpost opened a new solar panel park on the roof of its distribution center in Ostend this month, from which 6,000 parcels are delivered emission-free every day. With 614 solar panels, the installation in Ostend covers 2,300m².
According to Bpost, production at the solar park in Ostend is enough to charge five electric vans every hour from 0% to 100%. The operator has also expanded the charging capacity of the distribution center with 83 vehicle charging stations.
Eight additional installations
In the next nine months, Bpost hope to create eight new solar panel parks at the Aat, Brakel, Ypres, Knokke, Maldegem, Nivelles, Seraing and Tielt distribution centers.
In addition to the energy generated by Bpost itself, the parcel company also uses only renewable energy through external electricity suppliers.
