DP World is launching Insetify, a carbon inset trial for ocean freight forwarding customers in Belgium, Portugal and Sweden, aimed at reducing Scope 3 emissions across European trade lanes.
From April 1, carbon inset credits will be applied automatically to qualifying customers booking ocean freight forwarding services with DP World in those three markets. Importers and exporters that meet the threshold will receive credits each quarter at no additional cost.
Under the trial, customers will receive Carbon Inset Credits at 100kg carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per TEU of containerized ocean freight shipped per quarter. The offer applies once a customer ships at least 25 TEUs in a quarter.
DP World said that a customer shipping 50 TEUs in one quarter would receive credits equal to 5,000kg of CO2e for that period.
The company said the trial expands its existing Carbon Inset Programme at the UK ports of Southampton and London Gateway, which was launched in January 2025 and which has registered more than 250,000 TEUs and issued more than 9,000 metric tons of Carbon Inset Credits.
DP World said the credits are generated through the use of incrementally lower-carbon fuel in its subsidiary, DP World Shipping Solutions. Unlike carbon offsets, which typically fund external projects such as tree planting, carbon insets are intended to reduce emissions within a company’s own value chain.
The Insetify trial also includes sustainability training for customers to help them understand the trial and address supply chain emissions.
John Trenchard, vice president of sustainable international supply chains for Europe at DP World, said, “Providing customers with multiple solutions to enable the decarbonization of supply chains is important to DP World. As part of our proactive approach to working alongside clients, we are recognizing an immediate focus on inland activity and a high level of residual emissions within ocean legs.
“The Insetify trial allows for a pragmatic approach to managing these residual emissions as part of a longer-term, holistic plan. I would encourage organizations to explore how carbon insets can be used as part of intentional progress.”
Geert Verhoeven, vertical lead for chemicals in Europe at DP World, said the Belgium launch builds on DP World’s operations in Antwerp, including its freight forwarding office, port terminal and chemical hub activities.
Portugal branch manager for freight forwarding Silvio Sousa said the trial follows the opening of DP World’s European Control Tower and freight forwarding branch in Porto last year.
DP World freight forwarding Sweden manager Bojan Knightly said the trial will coincide with the opening of new offices in Stockholm and Gothenburg as part of DP World’s freight forwarding expansion into Scandinavia.
