DHL Express has signed a memorandum of understanding with UAE-based LODD Autonomous to explore the integration of its unmanned Hili aircraft into DHL’s express delivery network.
Under the agreement, the two companies will begin a series of operational workshops to identify priority routes and use cases for unmanned cargo delivery. The focus will be on defining potential routes, assessing payload requirements and evaluating how the Hili aircraft could be incorporated into DHL’s last-mile operations.
“As the global leader in international express delivery, speed and reliability are essential to maintaining our strong market position,” said Bachi Spiga, VP of network operations for the Middle East and North Africa at DHL Express. “In fast-growing regions like the UAE, where road congestion poses new challenges, innovations such as LODD’s unmanned Hili aircraft present a sustainable way forward to meet the rising demand effectively.”
The Hili aircraft is designed for last- and middle-mile cargo delivery. It has a maximum payload of 250kg and can carry two Euro pallets. The platform features vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capability, a range of 700km with a 30-minute reserve, and a maximum cruise altitude of 14,000ft.
“Partnering with DHL Express reflects the UAE’s ambition to lead the world in advanced air mobility and smart logistics,” said Rashid Al Manai, CEO of LODD. “Through joint operational workshops, we will focus on route definition, payload optimization, turnaround times and system interoperability to ensure safe, reliable, and scalable deployment.”
DHL Express has operated in the UAE for 50 years and manages around 40 locations across the country, including service points, gateways and hubs. The company operates more than 350 vehicles and supports over 150 daily flight connections from the UAE using its dedicated aircraft fleet.
The MoU signals DHL Express’s interest in assessing unmanned aerial systems as part of its regional network strategy, particularly in markets facing increasing congestion and demand for faster delivery options.
