DPD develops landing terminal for safe drone deliveries

DPDgroup has developed a new terminal for use by delivery drones to ensure greater safety standards when taking off, landing and releasing parcels.

The delivery terminal has been created in partnership with drone technology developer Atechsys, and features a structure that protects access to the drone during landing and take-off phases. It also has an automated carriage system for transporting the parcel and an electronic system devoted to the safety of handling operations around the drone.

DPD has been testing the uses of drone technology in the delivery sector since June 2014. In September 2014, a DPD drone successfully traveled approximately 3,940ft to deliver a 3kg (6.6 lb) parcel in real-life conditions. In February 2015, further tests were carried out in severely cold conditions to test the robustness and reliability of the drones.

The specifications of a typical DPD drone include flight distances of up to 20km (12.4miles), a payload of up to 4kg (8.8 lb) and an average speed of 30km/h (18.6mph). Each drone is constructed with a carbon fiber frame with six rotors, and contains an embedded GPS system and flight camera.
