The Universal Postal Union (UPU) has extended its cooperation with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to strengthen the security of international airmail.
As global e-commerce continues to expand, the security of international mail has become increasingly critical, according to the two industry bodies. In a joint statement published on August 4, ICAO and UPU outlined their enhanced cooperation, including efforts aimed at further aligning their respective security frameworks. This includes the adoption of cutting-edge technologies – such as advanced x-ray systems and explosive detection equipment – to improve security and operational efficiency within postal and cargo operations.
Juan Carlos Salazar, ICAO secretary general, commented, “This partnership represents a unified, proactive approach to current and future challenges in air cargo and mail security. A secure airmail system is a shared responsibility. This partnership ensures airmail services remain secure, resilient and efficient.”
The initiative builds on a longstanding collaboration between ICAO and UPU, and significantly strengthens their respective oversight capabilities. The ICAO’s Universal Security Audit Programme and the UPU’s certification framework will ensure consistent security standards across all member states.
Both parties have said that they are committed to supporting their respective members and postal operators in adopting practical and risk-based measures, benefiting from enhanced information sharing and enhanced visibility and transmission of data, to protect the integrity of the global mail and cargo supply chain.
