GLS has begun construction on a new logistics facility in Zaragoza – set to be the regional hub behind its operational network in northeastern Spain.
The installation is being developed in collaboration with Montepino, a logistics developer, under a model that supports GLS’s growth and transformation plans.
Situated in the Plaza industrial park, the new hub will enjoy strategic connections to the A-2 (Madrid and Barcelona), A-23 (Valencia) and AP-68 (Bilbao) highways, making it a key site for the expansion of GLS Spain’s network
With a plot area of 21,491m², the facility will include a 7,385m² warehouse and 942m² of office space spread across two floors. The hub will be equipped with three automated sorting systems with a reported combined capacity of up to 16,000 parcels per hour.
“This project represents a firm step in our logistics transformation and expansion plan, strengthening our presence in Aragón and providing GLS with a first-class facility in one of the country’s most important logistics hubs,” said Sonia Aira, northeast division manager at GLS Spain.
Sunstainability, technology and employee well-being
The warehouse is expected to achieve LEED Gold certification, thanks to a range of environmental and energy measures. Photovoltaic panels will generate 20% of the site’s electricity, and water-saving systems will reportedly reduce use by up to 45%. There will also be 38 charging stations for electric vehicles.
The hub will reportedly feature technology including an integrated building management system (BMS), advanced video surveillance, a complete telecommunications network (wired and wi-fi) and a flexible design geared toward process digitalization.
Employee well-being is also said to have been a key focus in the project’s design, with dedicated rest areas, a fully equipped cafeteria, changing rooms with separate showers, employee parking spaces, accessible entrances for people with reduced mobility, and spacious, well-lit work areas.
A key step in GLS’s expansion plan
This new facility marks a milestone in GLS Spain’s strategic plan, which is focused on enhancing efficiency, capacity and sustainability across its national network.
The collaboration with Montepino, a publicly listed company with an existing presence in Aragón, is expected to ensure agile execution aligned with high technical and environmental standards.
Construction will be completed by March 2026, with operations expected to begin in the second quarter of 2026.
