From September 2025, all online shops in Austria will be able to offer customers the new PostPay payment option at checkout following a successful trial by Austrian Post on its own online marketplace.
PostPay, which will also allow cash payment upon delivery, removes the payment process from the e-commerce ordering process. Customers do not need payment details, passwords or authentication when shopping online – payment is instead made between ordering and delivery, either online via common payment service providers, upon delivery, or upon pickup of the package.
Peter Umundum, deputy CEO and member of the management board for parcel and logistics at Austrian Post, explained, “With PostPay, we have developed a modern, secure and customer-friendly payment option that meets the needs of today’s online retail. Retailers benefit from a higher conversion rate, while buyers enjoy maximum flexibility and security.”
PostPay works in four easy steps:
- Select the PostPay payment method at checkout.
- The parcel is handed over to Austrian Post for transportation.
- A payment request is sent by email.
- Transfer the amount or pay upon delivery or when picking up at a postal partner or post office.
According to Austrian Post, retailers can benefit from a higher conversion rate thanks to a simplified payment process and, since Austrian Post handles both payment and delivery, secure payment receipt before or upon delivery is guaranteed.
For buyers, they no longer need to enter payment details during the ordering process and benefit from more flexibility by paying by credit card or instant transfer during transportation, or later upon delivery or collection. Processing by Austrian Post increases security and simplifies returns with automatic refunds, the company said.
To use PostPay, retailers must ship from Austria and select Austrian Post as their transportation service provider. Interested companies can register directly at sales.postpay@post.at to integrate PostPay into their own online shop.
