Austrian Post has fully converted its mail and parcel delivery operations in Vienna to electric vehicles and foot-based delivery, making the Austrian capital the largest European metropolis with entirely CO2-free last-mile postal delivery, according to the company.

The milestone was marked at a launch event at Heldenplatz on June 15, attended by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Austrian minister of economic affairs Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, Vienna city councillor for climate, environment, democracy and personnel Jürgen Czernohorszky and Austrian Post CEO Walter Oblin.

More than 1,300 delivery personnel now operate across Vienna using e-bikes, e-mopeds, electric vans or on foot. The roughly 1,000 electric vehicles in the Vienna fleet cover approximately 8,000,000km  annually. Austrian Post has invested €32m (US$37m) in electric vehicles and charging infrastructure to complete the transition.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, initiator of the Austrian World Summit, taking place June 16, 2026, said, “I am delighted that Austrian Post is supporting our Austrian World Summit this year and playing a central role in sustainability in Austria. The consistent expansion of electrically powered logistics, in particular, demonstrates how seriously Austrian Post is taking the path to a low-emission future. E-mobility is a crucial path forward worldwide, and every investment in this area is worthwhile. The Schwarzenegger Climate Initiative will continue to support concrete solutions for a healthy planet in the coming years. I wish Austrian Post all the best for its endeavors and thank it sincerely for this important initiative.”

Oblin added, “With the complete transformation of our deliveries in Vienna, we are setting a milestone for electrically powered logistics in Europe. Today, around 1,000 vehicles are in operation in Vienna, saving approximately 2,300 metric tons of CO2 annually – clear proof that climate protection and economically efficient delivery on a large scale are compatible.”

Austrian Post generates a portion of the electricity required through photovoltaic systems at three sites in Vienna and Hagenbrunn, Lower Austria, with a combined capacity of 5.9MWp (megawatt peak). All remaining electricity purchased is sourced from Austrian renewable energy.

Hattmannsdorfer highlighted the economic dimension, noting that Austrian Post had “built up Austria’s largest electric vehicle fleet and made Vienna Europe’s largest CO2-free delivery center, powered exclusively by Austrian green electricity.”

Austrian Post already operates more than 6,000 electric vehicles nationally, making its electric fleet the largest in the country, with electric delivery also fully operational in Graz, Salzburg and Innsbruck. The company has set a target of converting all last-mile deliveries across Austria to electric vehicles or foot delivery by 2030.
