Correos expands solar power program with new photovoltaic installations at logistics centers across Spain

Correos expands solar installations at logistics centers across Spain.

Correos is expanding its self-consumption solar energy program with new photovoltaic installations at several logistics centers in Spain as part of its broader sustainability strategy.

The company said new solar plants will be installed at automated treatment centers (CTAs) in Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante and Seville. On average, the installations are expected to supply about 22% of the electricity consumed at those facilities.

Two sites in Barcelona – Sant Cugat del Vallès and Barcelona Colón – will receive solar systems with capacities of 450kWp and 93.74kWp respectively. Additional plants are planned in Alicante (400kWp), Valencia (455kWp) and Seville (528kWp).

Correos launched the Correos Solar project in 2022 with an installation at its Madrid Automated Treatment Center, its largest logistics facility. According to the company, the Madrid installation produces an average of about 719,000kWh of renewable electricity per year, equivalent to roughly 22% of the site’s annual energy consumption.

A further six solar installations are expected to enter operation by the end of 2026. These are planned for logistics facilities in Las Palmas, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Málaga, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca and Vitoria.

Once these projects are completed, Correos expects to operate 12 photovoltaic self-consumption facilities across its logistics network with a combined installed capacity of about 4,255kWp. Annual production is estimated at between 5,500,000kWh and 6,800,000kWh of electricity.

The company said rooftop installations are used to optimize space, with solar panels covering areas of between 20,000m² and 25,000m² at some sites.

Correos plans to extend the solar program to 21 buildings over the next three years, with projected cumulative energy savings of €4.3m and an estimated production of around 25,000,000kWh between 2024 and 2028.

Alongside the solar rollout, the company said it continues to introduce energy efficiency measures across its operations. Since 2018, all electricity purchased by Correos has come from renewable sources with guarantees of origin, which the company says has helped avoid around 24,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions annually.

Additional measures include replacing diesel boilers in buildings, installing LED lighting across facilities and introducing a remote energy management system in 571 offices nationwide. The system monitors and regulates lighting, climate control and other energy uses, resulting in annual energy savings of approximately 1,331,000kWh.

Correos is also expanding electrification across its vehicle fleet. The company currently operates more than 4,000 vehicles using alternative technologies and aims for 50% of its fleet to consist of electric, hybrid or compressed natural gas vehicles by 2028.
