The new bpost bbox parcel locker facility in Ghent is the largest in Belgium. Located next to bpost’s distribution center, it weighs four metric tons, is 13m long and contains 224 individual lockers. It was officially inaugurated by Ghent Mayor Mathias De Clercq.
The installation forms part of a broader expansion of bpost’s parcel locker network. The company plans to install more than 1,000 additional bbox units nationwide this year, bringing the total to around 3,500 by the end of 2026, with the goal of having a locker within five-minutes of every resident.
According to the operator, bbox parcel locker use in Belgium has increased by 62% over the past 12 months. Returns and parcel sending via the lockers have also grown, rising by 42% over the same period.
The Ghent installation consists of 26 modules and includes a range of locker sizes, including three XL lockers capable of handling items up to 175cm in height, intended for larger deliveries such as technical equipment for businesses.
De Clerq said, “This is a great day for Ghent and four our residents. Especially for this densely populated neighborhood, where many people already live and where thousand more residents will be added, such a bbox is a major asset. It is great that bpost considers it important to have backup points close to all our city residents.”
Laurens Himpe, chief automated parcel officer at bpost, added, “We are pleased that cities and municipalities increasingly see bpost as a reliable partner that puts citizens at the heart of its approach. We do so whenever we offer logistical services or roll out infrastructure, such as our bboxes or bbox boutiques. Here in Ghent, we are taking an important step by working together with the city to reflect on the future of parcel logistics in its neighborhoods.”
Alongside its parcel lockers, bpost also operates 24/7 ‘bbox boutique’ facilities in cities including Antwerp and Brussels, as well as staffed pick-up points such as post offices and retail parcel locations. The company currently has more than 4,500 pick-up points across Belgium and expects to surpass 5,000 during 2026.
