Swissport has expanded its e-commerce logistics capabilities at Liege Airport (LGG) in Belgium with the opening of a 5,500m² second-line warehouse dedicated to import parcel processing. The aviation services provider says the investment strengthens its position in one of Europe’s fastest-growing cargo hubs and increases its total e-commerce footprint at Liege to 9,000m².
The facility is built for high-volume, fast-turnaround parcel flows and offers a throughput capacity of up to 300 tons per day. It enables fully integrated import logistics including cargo collection, airport-to-warehouse shuttling, parcel breakdown, scanning and sorting, and final loading for last-mile delivery.
“Liege has established itself as one of Europe’s most important cargo hubs, particularly for online retail,” said Dirk Goovaerts, CEO Continental Europe, Middle East, Africa, India and global cargo chair at Swissport. “With this investment, we are enhancing our ability to deliver fast, data-driven and sustainable logistics solutions for our airline and integrator partners. It’s another step in building scalable capacity where our customers need it most.”
The operation integrates customers’ warehouse management systems (WMS) with Swissport’s CargoSpot platform, enabling real-time shipment visibility and data integrity. The site is fully bonded and optimized for cross-dock processes focusing on safety, speed and efficiency.
“Our expanded footprint allows us to process higher volumes while maintaining the reliability and precision our customers expect,” said Wilfried Jans, managing director of Swissport Belgium. “The setup gives us the flexibility to manage complex, piece-intensive flows with full digital integration and a highly skilled team.”
Liege Airport welcomed the expansion as a further reinforcement of its e-commerce strategy. Frédéric Brun, head of commercial cargo and logistics at Liege Airport, said Swissport’s investment reflects confidence in Liege’s role as a leading European hub for e-commerce and express logistics.
The new facility operates with paperless, fully digital workflows that enhance efficiency and data transparency. Swissport says recycling programs for cardboard, wood and plastics are also in place to reduce waste and environmental impact, supporting the company’s global sustainability goals.
The Liege expansion forms part of a broader plan to build scalable e-commerce capacity across major trade gateways. Swissport now operates specialized e-commerce hubs in Brussels, Milan, Basel, New York JFK and Shanghai, offering airlines and integrators consistent service standards across key markets.
