Construction work has started on New Zealand Post’s new overnight parcel processing and distribution hub located at Christchurch International Airport’s business park.

The purpose-built facility will cover approximately 160,000ft² and will support 14 air movements and 46 line-haul movements a day. It will also be capable of processing up to 6,000 parcels per hour and will have 80 couriers serving the region. The hub will be adjacent to a new runway facility that will provide convenient access between aircraft and the depot. The facility is scheduled for completion in May 2017.

Ashley Smout, chief operating officer, New Zealand Post, said, “The southern operations center will house our Courier Post, Pace Express and courier operations. It will form an important part of the backbone of New Zealand Post Group’s overnight courier and parcels network, along with the Waikato operations center in Hamilton, the Auckland operations center in Highbrook, and the national road and air fleets.

“It will serve as our South Island transport and processing hub and enable us to introduce planned innovations and new services to give customers more control over and quicker processing of their parcels.”

“New Zealand Post’s investment at the site is more than NZ$8m (US$5.4m), including a significant investment in new automated parcel sorting technology, similar to what we have in Auckland.”
