FedEx has announced a €46m ($54.1m) investment to expand its road hub in Duiven in the Netherlands, increasing freight capacity and reinforcing the country’s role as a key European logistics gateway.
The investment will fund the procurement and development of a neighboring facility, with palletized freight handling capacity set to increase by more than 50%. The expansion will also add 65 dock doors, bringing the total on site to 265.
Safia Ladhari, managing director of network operations at FedEx, said the Duiven facility is “one of the largest and most technologically advanced FedEx road hubs within the European Road Network,” adding that its continental connectivity makes it “central” to the company’s European service offering.
The expansion is partly driven by FedEx’s ambitions in the premium airfreight segment. The global airfreight market is valued at nearly €76bn (US$90bn), with the premium segment estimated at around €19bn (US$22bn) – a market in which FedEx says it holds a 12% share (according to data presented at the FedEx Investor Day 2026).
Ladhari said the European road network supports that growth strategy by enabling intercontinental airfreight shipments to move efficiently across Europe by road. “This integrated truck-fly-truck model is a defining element of our very competitive freight services and offers customers a highly reliable and cost-efficient solution,” she said.
The additional capacity will enable more freight to move directly from customers to the hub, reducing dependence on first- and last-mile locations and easing pressure across the wider network – particularly during peak periods.
The expansion will be delivered in phases. The first will focus on getting the new facility operational, with subsequent phases targeting further efficiency improvements, including better connectivity between the existing and new buildings.
“Over the past year, the Duiven facility has seen strong growth in parcel and freight volumes, particularly during peak periods such as the year-end season,” Ladhari said. “This expansion ensures we are well positioned to support our customers through continued growth.”
