Belgian postal operator Bpost is investing in 19 new double-deck trailers, aiming to increase transportation efficiency ahead of the busy end-of-year delivery period.
The extra-large trailers, which feature two loading levels, can carry more than 2,000 parcels per journey – 60% more than a standard truck. Bpost said the added capacity will reduce the number of kilometers driven between its sorting and distribution centers, cutting CO2 emissions per delivered parcel by 30% compared with standard transportation.
The new trailers are expected to be operational by mid-November, in time for Bpost’s peak season, when the company delivers up to 800,000 parcels per day. From mid-November, they will be used for journeys between all Bpost sorting and distribution centers across Belgium.
The trailers include a movable loading floor to speed up loading and unloading, along with eight solar panels on each trailer’s roof to provide electricity for onboard systems.
According to Belgium’s parcel market regulator, Bpost has the lowest CO2 emissions per delivered parcel of any operator in the country. The company said the new trailer order builds on that position as part of its ongoing investment in sustainability and efficiency.
With the addition of the new trailers, Bpost said it continues to operate the largest electric fleet in Belgium, which includes 55 double-deck trailers equipped with solar panels, 3,089 electric vans, 3,024 electric bicycles and 571 e-bike trailers.
