Australia Post is to offer free PO boxes for up to 12 months to people experiencing homelessness in Adelaide, beginning in March 2026.
The initiative will enable eligible individuals without a fixed address to receive mail securely at selected post offices. The service is intended to help people access important correspondence, including identification documents, medical information and housing or employment-related communications.
To qualify, applicants must attend a participating post office in person and present a referral letter from Toward Home Resolve at The Salvation Army, which provides housing and support services to people experiencing homelessness.
Kate Foley, general manager of retail operations south at Australia Post, said, “Something as simple as a safe and secure place to receive mail can make a meaningful difference for people doing it tough. It provides peace of mind that important documents won’t be lost, stolen or withheld, and helps people stay connected to the services and opportunities that support stability and recovery.
“We believe everyone in our community deserves the opportunity to feel connected and supported, and this initiative is about removing a small but significant barrier for those who need it most.”
The free PO box service will be available at four locations: Adelaide GPO Post Shop on Franklin Street; Adelaide Rundle Mall Post Shop; Adelaide Business Centre on Gouger Street; and Adelaide Halifax Street Post Shop.
Kim Herbert, social mission state manager for South Australia at The Salvation Army, said, “For people experiencing homelessness, not having a safe and reliable way to receive mail can create real barriers to securing housing, employment, healthcare and identification. Something as simple as a PO box can help people stay connected, regain stability and move forward with confidence.”
Individuals seeking a referral can contact Toward Home Resolve at its Pirie Street office in Adelaide.
