Maersk has launched its Mega Distribution Centre (DC) in Malaysia. This is the company’s largest warehouse facility in Asia-Pacific and will reportedly boost Maersk’s warehouse footprint in the region by more than 30%.
The Mega DC – spanning a total floor area of nearly 180,000m2 with 100,000 pallet positions – is a multi-client facility designed to be able to handle a wide range of commodities such as food and beverage items, footwear and clothing.
The facility has been constructed in the strategic location of Shah Alam, which provides direct connectivity with major highways such as the North-South Expressway, ELITE Highway and Shah Alam Expressway. It also boasts easy access to key industrial zones, urban centers, Port Klang and Kuala Lumpur International Airport, improving transit times for customers.
By connecting cargo from overseas airports directly to retailers and consumers through enhanced warehousing and last-mile delivery, Maersk predicts that the facility will lead to faster, more reliable distribution across Asia-Pacific.
Elaine Low, area managing director for Southeast Asia at Maersk, said, “Domestic consumption has been buoyant and we’re seeing increasing opportunities to support businesses across diverse industry sectors in Malaysia. With shared resources within this multi-client facility, we’re able to deliver enhanced cost-efficiency and operational agility – empowering customers to scale their warehousing and distribution seamlessly, especially during peak demand periods.”
K S Chang, head of Maersk contract logistics Asia-Pacific, added, “This facility marks one of Maersk’s most significant milestone investments in Asia-Pacific and stands among our largest contract logistics sites globally. This hub reinforces our integrated capabilities to deliver reliable, flexible supply chains and modern, automated solutions that will help customers scale and reach local consumers more effectively.”
The facility is equipped with several notable technology and automation systems, designed to speed up order fulfillment, improve efficiency and reduce human error. These include autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), put-to-light (PTL) technology and an automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS).
Other facility highlights:
- End-to-end transportation management system – real-time tracking and monitoring of shipments;
- Bonded and non-bonded warehouse storage – customs officers are available on-site, ensuring faster import/export clearances, reducing dwell time for cargo and allowing for quicker release of goods;
- Value-added services – tagging, labeling, repacking, palletizing, returns management, quality control and product disposal;
- Maersk’s warehouse management system (WMS) and electronic data interchange (EDI) capabilities – providing customers with real-time inventory and transaction visibility, traceability and possibilities for technological integration with their existing systems;
- Green Building Index (GBI) Gold and LEED Gold certified – features to reduce energy and water use, including rooftop solar panel installations, smart LED lighting and rainwater harvesting solutions;
- Safety features – forklift safety systems to ensure correct positioning, enhance pedestrian visibility and reduce collision risks, robust fire protection and fighting systems and 24/7 CCTV surveillance.
