Poczta Polska has announced a major investment to fully automate letter processes by 2028. The post says the investment will be crucial for improving service quality and customer satisfaction, despite declining volumes in this segment. It is part of the organization’s Transformation Plan, which aims to boost process optimization and reduce technological debt.
New letter sorters will eliminate the need for posties to manually sort thousands of letters each morning, thereby reducing preparation time and increasing delivery efficiency, the organization said.
Paweł Witkowski, director of the logistics operations office at Poczta Polska, said, “The letter process automation project is an important element of the modernization of Poczta Polska’s operational processes. It supports our core business, including our role as the national postal operator, and the development of e-delivery.
Poczta Polska says it has run simulations showing cost savings of up to zł100m (US$27m) annually from automating letter processes.
Scale of investment and locations
The project will require the installation of a complete IT environment and at least 18 letter sorters in six main operational centers: Warsaw, Zabrze, Komorniki, Lisi Ogon, Wrocław and Pruszcz Gdański.
The machines will handle standard letters and larger parcels up to 2kg (so-called flat parcels).
Optical character recognition (OCR) lines equipped with a set of conveyors with a camera system and printers will also be installed, reportedly allowing for the recording of data on 100% of letter shipments entering Poczta Polska’s logistics network.
