GLS Germany has begun construction of a new distribution center in Bremen’s Hemelingen district, which will process up to 35,000 parcels per day.
The facility, which is being built on a 24,000m2 site on Europaallee, close to the freeway, is scheduled to open in late summer 2026.
The new site will double GLS’s current capacity in Bremen and enable the company to grow its operations in the region. Around 190 employees will work on-site.
Moritz Eichhöfer, CEO of GLS Germany, commented, “Getting a site like this, undeveloped and in a prominent location, was a stroke of luck for us – but not a sure-fire success. It took two Senate resolutions, intensive coordination and a lot of patience on the part of everyone involved.
“The fact that we are holding the spade in our hands today shows that we believe in this location. We look forward to a strong future together with the city of Bremen.”
The new building will be energy-efficient, equipped with a green roof, charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and preparations for a photovoltaic system. A separate mobility concept was developed as part of the planning application process, to reduce private transportation and promote low-emission alternatives for employees.
