New Zealand Post has begun rolling out the first wave of its new Paxster electric-delivery vehicles in the North Shore district of Auckland as well as the southern town of Oamaru.

The Paxsters can carry a load of up to 200kg (440lbs) but are still small enough to drive on sidewalks. New Zealand Post remains in close contact with Auckland Transport and has been given permission to use the vehicles on the sidewalks in residential neighborhoods. The Paxsters will not be used in major shopping areas.

Mark Stewart, chief operating officer, customer service delivery, New Zealand Post, said, “These vehicles are an investment in New Zealand Post’s future as we change the way we deliver to meet the growing demand for parcel deliveries. They’re also environmentally friendly which is important to our customers and us.

“Previous trials have shown these vehicles are safe to use on the footpath. Our drivers receive safety training, and they will give way to all other footpath users.”
