DHL Group’s Post & Parcel Germany (P&P) division and its subsidiary StreetScooter have completed the rollout of a new proprietary charging and load management system for their electric vehicle (EV) fleet. The system, developed in collaboration with engineering partner IAV, is designed to optimize energy use, reduce peak loads and improve operational reliability across the company’s mail and parcel operations.
The new platform builds on a pilot project involving around 600 vehicles from multiple manufacturers. According to DHL Group, the system’s intelligent energy flow control helps lower electricity costs by preventing load peaks and by integrating renewable and on-site generated energy such as solar power. It also supports the inclusion of stationary battery storage and heat pumps within local energy networks.
Thomas Schlickenrieder, senior vice president of infrastructure operations of the P&P division, said, “With over 35,000 electric vehicles, we have a significant need for an intelligent, stable charging and load management system that is deeply integrated into our operations. Our new in-house solution helps us reduce energy costs, accelerate electrification and ensure operational stability in our mail and parcel business.”
The software enables vehicle charging management via backend interfaces and direct vehicle connectivity. Using live state-of-charge data and customizable charging parameters, it calculates energy demand and generates 24-hour charging plans for each vehicle. The system adapts dynamically to environmental conditions and operational requirements, including vehicle preconditioning in colder months.
DHL says the new ecosystem also enables relevant data to be integrated into external analysis and monitoring systems, enabling separate monitoring of charging processes, more efficient deployment planning and significantly faster error analysis.
StreetScooter and IAV plan to make the solution available to external customers. Rainer Wode, chief operating officer at StreetScooter, described the rollout as a “milestone” in the company’s e-mobility work, while IAV’s Michael Gröschel highlighted that the system is designed to meet modern IT security standards and can be customized to individual customer requirements.
