Canada Post has announced it will extend its community mailbox conversion program to 37 additional communities across the country in 2027, affecting approximately 485,000 addresses currently receiving door-to-door delivery.
The expansion adds to the 136,000 addresses across 13 communities already scheduled for conversion in late 2026 or early 2027, as the Crown corporation pushes ahead with a broader transformation plan aimed at returning to financial sustainability. Canada Post recorded a record loss in 2025 and a further significant loss in the first quarter of 2026.
The 2027 conversions span communities in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia. Ontario accounts for the largest share at around 158,000 addresses, covering Ajax, Brampton, Hawkesbury, Kitchener, London, Mississauga, Ottawa and Pickering. Quebec follows with approximately 139,000 addresses across six communities including Laval, Longueuil and Quebec City. British Columbia’s 81,000 affected addresses span 15 communities, including Victoria, Kelowna and several Metro Vancouver municipalities. Calgary and Edmonton together account for around 56,000 addresses in Alberta.
Canada Post said the national conversion program covers four million addresses still receiving door-to-door delivery and is expected to take approximately five years. The corporation noted that nearly three quarters of Canadian addresses already use some form of centralized delivery, including community mailboxes, apartment lobby boxes and post office boxes.
The corporation said community mailboxes reduce delivery costs and improve security by placing mail and parcels under lock and key. It added that more than 80% of parcels it delivers fit into a community mailbox compartment, with oversized or signature-required items delivered to the door or held at a nearby post office.
For residents with functional limitations, Canada Post’s Delivery Accommodation Program offers free support including sliding trays, Braille features, accessible compartment assignments and, in some cases, weekly home delivery. More than 17,000 households currently use the program. Residents can apply after receiving notification of their new mailbox location, or by calling 1 844 454 3009.
Canada Post said it will engage with local governments to identify suitable mailbox sites and will notify residents, businesses, employees and bargaining agents of any changes in advance. The conversion process typically takes several months from announcement to implementation.
