Omniva is to begin installing a new network of parcel lockers designed for smaller communities in Estonian villages in March, expanding access to parcel services outside major population centers.
The international logistics and technology group said 150 parcel lockers will be installed across Estonia this spring, with around 400 planned by the end of the year. The rollout is aimed at making it more convenient to send and receive parcels in rural areas, with locations selected in cooperation with local municipalities.
“Omniva’s goal is to develop a dense, close-to-home parcel infrastructure across Estonia, making e-commerce – which people increasingly prefer – conveniently accessible also in smaller communities. We are moving toward a future where every Estonian settlement has its own parcel locker,” said Martti Kuldma, CEO of Omniva.
“Community parcel lockers are specifically designed for rural areas – they are battery-powered, quick to install and relocate, and can be expanded modularly from seven to 21 compartments,” Kuldma added.
Omniva said municipalities and local communities have played a central role in identifying suitable locations, based on local movement patterns and everyday service needs. The first confirmed sites include villages and small towns across multiple counties, such as Martna and Kullamaa in the Lääne-Nigula municipality; Varstu and Mikitamäe in Võrumaa; and Suuremõisa in Hiiumaa. The lockers will be installed at municipal buildings, local stores, libraries and other community hubs.
Beyond Estonia, Omniva has also confirmed 16 new community parcel locker locations in Latvia and 20 in Lithuania. Analysis is ongoing to determine the remaining sites for the first phase of installations, and the company says it will soon launch a public call for proposals for additional locations.
Customers will use the new lockers in the same way as Omniva’s existing parcel locker network. Parcel recipients will receive a pickup code via SMS, email or the Omniva app, which they enter on the keypad to open the locker. To send a parcel, users must first register it in the Omniva app or self-service facility before depositing it in the locker.
The lockers have been designed with accessibility in mind. Omniva said the keypads and compartments are accessible to wheelchair users, and the keypads include Braille numbering.
Once installation dates are confirmed for specific locations, Omniva will notify local residents through municipalities and, where possible, local media and social media channels.
