Latvia Post expands parcel locker network

Postal operator Latvia Post (Latvijas Pasts) has announced it is to invest €6m (US$6.5m) in expanding its parcel locker network. It is set to install its 200th parcel locker this month and is targeting growing this to 420 next year.

The 200th parcel locker will be located near the Lidl retail store at Sporta Street 10 in Riga, Latvia, and will be available to customers at any time. This has been an important reference point for Latvia Post since the purchase of the parcel locker network in 2019. According to the company, the demand from Latvia Post customers for parcel locker services has quadrupled since then and continues to grow.

Latvia Post also rolled out the functionality to enable recipients to receive multiple items in a single parcel locker compartment, even if the items have been delivered from different senders, and Latvia Post customers will soon also have the option to send items from parcel lockers.

Mārcis Vilcāns, chairman of the board of Latvia Post, said, “The placement of the 200th parcel locker and future plans for the expansion of the parcel locker network emphasize the company’s constant commitment to progress so that the services of Latvijas Pasts become even more accessible and convenient for customers.

“Despite the crises and the pandemic experienced in these years, Latvijas Pasts has established a long-term vision for the development of the company’s parcel locker network to become an increasingly competitive player in providing this service. Also, work continues on the modernization of various processes and services, introducing new technological solutions for faster sorting and delivery of items.”

Sandra Rogaļska, head of the postal terminal services department of Latvia Post, commented, “It is no secret that there is a lot of competition in parcel locker services, making it even more satisfying that, despite the crises and the pandemic, which significantly affected our parcel network locker expansion plans, we can now celebrate the installation of the 200th parcel locker.

“Our goal is not only to double the number of existing parcel lockers from 200 to over 400 in a short period but also to expand their functionality as much as possible. There will soon be the possibility to send items for courier delivery, as well as to choose the most suitable parcel locker, where all items intended for the addressee can be conveniently received at all times. As a result, we will be able to strengthen our position as the broadest network in Latvia in terms of the receipt of items.”
