Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and Austrian Post have announced a new partnership that will see 24/7 post offices (parcel lockers) installed at train stations across Austria, allowing commuters to combine their daily journeys with picking up or sending parcels.
Approximately 50 lockers will be installed, each with its own electricity supply via a photovoltaic module on the roof.
Silvia Angelo, a member of the executive board at ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG, commented, “Railway stations are central mobility hubs – places where people not only arrive and depart every day but can also take advantage of services. The new 24/7 post offices are a further step toward establishing train stations as modern service centers in people’s everyday lives and making our passengers’ journeys even more efficient.
“I am particularly pleased that we are also focusing on innovative, energy-self-sufficient solutions – another step toward a sustainable and modern infrastructure for Austria.”
The first 24/7 parcel locker has been installed in front of the train station in Leobendorf, and includes more than 50 parcel compartments. Other sites will follow in the coming months, with four locations in Lower Austria and one in Burgenland already decided.
Walter Oblin, the CEO of Austrian Post, said, “With this cooperation, two large Austrian companies are combining their strengths to make people’s everyday lives even easier and more convenient. Our new locations at train stations bring the post office even closer to our customers and enable optimal connections.
“I am particularly proud of the use of the first energy-self-sufficient post office with a photovoltaic module. It supplies itself with electricity and thus represents an important step toward a sustainable and future-oriented infrastructure.”
