UPS has broken ground its 840,000ft² regional operations hub in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The new US$275m facility will be capable of processing up to 69,000 parcels per hour and will complement UPS’s existing 200,000ft² delivery hub based in the city center.

When complete, the regional hub will be one of the largest in the UPS network, employing approximately 1,500 members of staff. It will have two automated processing areas dedicated to sorting smaller-sized packages (smalls) as well as an on-site fueling station to accommodate both diesel and natural gas vehicles.

Mark Wallace, senior vice president of global engineering and sustainability, UPS, said, “This new regional hub is one of our strategic initiatives to continue to build the long-term future of UPS. Utah is the crossroads to serving the western USA, and the state-of-the-art automation technology being deployed will improve performance, increase capacity and create additional flexibility to handle the non-stop growth of e-commerce business in the region.”

Ken Cherry, president of the UPS Desert Mountain district, said, “UPS customers will benefit from new efficiencies and capacity, while the project helps to sustain and grow jobs in the area for a positive economic impact.”
