Australia Post has introduced a new Counterfeit Detection Tool to combat fraudulent postage products sold online.
The technology authenticates stamps, stamped satchels and prepaid satchels sold online, automatically flagging counterfeit items and providing near real-time analytics. According to the postal operator, the system has already identified hundreds of fake products, removing several million dollars’ worth of counterfeit postage from online marketplaces.
Kevin Zuccato, general manager of group security at Australia Post, said the rise in counterfeit postage was deeply concerning and warned that those involved in producing, selling or using fake products risk prosecution.
“Counterfeit postal products aren’t new, but we’re seeing a significant increase in circulation,” Zuccato said. “Our new tool allows us to efficiently identify and promptly remove fraudulent products online.”
He added that using counterfeit postage is likely to prevent mail from reaching its destination, urging customers to buy directly from Post Offices or the official Australia Post Online Shop.
Australia Post’s anti-counterfeiting efforts also involve collaboration with the Australian Border Force to intercept counterfeit goods before they reach consumers. Confiscated items are analyzed at a dedicated facility to check for quality differences and verify security features such as watermarks.
